September 29, 2026
Kerala Vigilant Against Substance Abuse:
'Toofan Thadesham' , the second phase of the anti-drug initiative 'Operation Toofan', has been launched. Hon. Home Minister Shri Ramesh Chennithala inaugurated the initiative at Vengara, Malappuram. The second phase aims to extend the fight against substance abuse to every ward. He stated that special 'Toofan Committees' would be formed in all wards. 'Operation Toofan' had previously succeeded in reducing drug usage in the state by up to 30 percent. He further explained that, in addition to focusing on wards, the initiative's activities would expand to college campuses; the 'Toofan Care' component aims to rescue those trapped in addiction by ensuring access to quality treatment and rehabilitation.
Launch of 'Operation Toofan' Activities in Chemmaruthy Grama Panchayat:
A live stream facilitated by KILA was set up at the Chemmaruthi Grama Panchayat. The event was attended by the Grama Panchayat President, elected representatives, the Panchayat Secretary, officials (including the Sub-Inspector of Aiyroor Police), school teachers, students, members of Kudumbashree and the Haritha Karma Sena, and the general public. Following this, the Grama Panchayat President, Sri. Rareesh G., hoisted the 'Toofan' flag and administered the pledge to those present. Additionally, the Sub-Inspector of Aiyroor Police conducted an awareness session regarding the 'Toofan' initiative.
Toofan Warriors:
Ten volunteers were selected from each ward of the Chemmaruthi Grama Panchayat—comprising staff, members of Kudumbashree and the Haritha Karma Sena, students, youth, and teachers—to be designated as 'Toofan Warriors,' and badges were distributed to them. 'Toofan Grama Sabhas' & Public Vigilance Committees: Special 'Toofan Grama Sabhas' will be convened at the ward level. It was also decided to include the police and 'Toofan Warriors' in existing ward-level public vigilance committees to identify hotspots prone to the spread of drugs and ensure continuous monitoring.
